5 Simple Steps to Finding Your Perfect Niche
Finding a niche is essential for gaining clarity, attracting the right audience, and ultimately achieving success as a writer.
For many of us, narrowing our focus feels like we’re closing the door on other topics and interests. I know, and until I went through this process, I felt that way too. But remember, this is a niche, not a marriage. Once you’ve honed the skills to build one niche, you’ve got the tools to add more! After all, this is about progress, right?
So, let’s get a head start.
Step 1: Discover Your Passion
Ask yourself: What subjects light you up?
Exercise: Make a list of 5 topics you love discussing or learning about, even in your free time.
Step 2: Identify Your Strengths
Ask yourself: What skills or knowledge do you have that others might find valuable?
Exercise: Write down 3 areas where you have more knowledge or experience than the average person.
Step 3: Audience Problem-Solving
Ask yourself: What problems do people come to you for help with?
Exercise: List 3 challenges you’ve helped others with, or that you could help solve through writing.
Step 4: Research Demand
Look at search volume and popular articles in the areas you’re interested in.
Exercise: Use tools like Google Trends or AnswerThePublic to see if your niche idea has enough demand.
Step 5: Test Your Idea
Before fully committing, try writing 3-5 articles in your potential niche. See which ones resonate most with your audience.
Exercise: Set a goal to write and publish 3 niche-specific posts this month.
Now that you’ve taken these steps to find your perfect niche, let’s pair it with your learning style super-power for an extra boost.
Using Your Learning Style to Tap Into Your Strengths
Starting an online business as a solopreneur can be a thrilling yet daunting journey.
One of the first and most critical steps is selecting a niche that not only aligns with market demand but also resonates with your personal strengths and interests.
A fun and insightful way to approach this is by leveraging your learning style, as identified by the Kolb Experiential Learning Profile (KELP). Knowing my own learning style has not only helped me appreciate my unique thinking process, but also to harness my natural strengths.
While most of us are a combination of these learning styles, you may lean more toward one than than another. Have fun, and use this as a starting point, not an end point.
